Origins

The Alias Dance Project was founded in 2006 by emerging dance artists Geordan Coupland, Meghan Cafferky, Lauren Cook and Sarah Yu with the objective of fusing contemporary and urban dance genres to create a new aesthetic.

Mission

Alias Dance Project is a not –for profit, Toronto based collective.   Drawing from contemporary choreographic tools, our mission is to commission and create works that are accessible yet meaningful and offer perspectives on current socio-cultural concerns. Through bridging urban and contemporary forms, we seek to connect our movement vocabulary to a greater context and create significant work that can be viewed through a lens of physical risk and virtuosity.

Vision

While maintaining its original spirit of collaboration and invention, Alias seeks to further the professional development of its members through the commissioning of artists across a variety of disciplines in order to develop a repertoire of exciting new dance. While embracing our individual strengths as interpreters, Alias members also seek to create a shared physical aesthetic. Through athleticism, risk and ‘physical equality’, we hope to remove limitations within the creative process.

Alias is looking to expand its activities through teaching and hosting workshops, honoring our belief in the reciprocal value of education. We believe that instructing and inspiring the creative spark in youth will bring deeper meaning to our work, as we will come to understand ourselves through the explanation and reflection that is inherent in education.
